Here’s My OER Review – Enjoy

P2PU is a completely FREE online university ran by peer volunteers.  It is the place to go to learn and collaborate with people just like you.  The instructors of the course offered a volunteers and welcome constructive input and feedback from participants and followers.

P2PU Mission Statement

The Peer 2 Peer University is a grassroots open education project that organizes learning outside of institutional walls and gives learners recognition for their achievements. P2PU creates a model for lifelong learning alongside traditional formal higher education. Leveraging the internet and educational materials openly available online, P2PU enables high-quality low-cost education opportunities. P2PU – learning for everyone, by everyone about almost anything.

The basis behind P2PU is to provide free learning to everyone.  We are all teachers and learners and P2PU certainly gives a new meaning to that statement.  Anyone and everyone is given the opportunity to create schools, classes, study groups, etc.  Also within classes participants are given the opportunity to give suggestions or recommendation about the course content, how it should be taught, and resources that can be used to teach the course.  However, the importance that everything be totally FREE or is stressed continually.

P2PU understands that education is expensive and in some cases unobtainable; therefore, they pride themselves in offering classes that are informative, innovative, collaborative, and most importantly FREE.  Although P2PU does not offer degrees, you can receive certificates for completing the course work.

Unless otherwise noted, all the materials on this site are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike 3.0 Unported license (CONNECTION!)  Under this licensing peers are free to share and remix (ANOTHER CONNECTION!) any work found on the site.

P2PU is made possible by a global network of exceptional people and organizations. Supporters have allowed them to open the web up to the most effective kind of learning – peer to peer learning.

What does P2PU have to offer?

Courses are set up just like courses at any other university.  They consist of 8 weeks of course work.  P2PU pulls from a variety of OER resources to help to build upon or enhance their courses.  They have courses ranging from How Your Lifestyle Affects Your Metabolism  (Did you know that 1 mile a day burns over half a stone in a year?) to Interprete de comandos y Unix ( I am assuming it is some kind of computer class totally in Spanish. I should have paid closer attention to my Spanish classes in high school.  Who knew they may come in handy one day?)

You have the option of being a class participant or a follower.

Participants and followers  can:

  • Create new study groups
  • Join community discussions
  • Join a study group
  • Help improve the site
  • Join a P2PU working group
  • Donate
  • Join or start a meetup
  • Sign up for announcements list
  • Provide information about classes they follow and the usefulness of those classes

Course Participation:

Participants take courses.  In other words they do all of the required course work and receive a certificate of completion once they complete all of the required assignments/readings associated with that course.

Followers don’t take courses.  The best way for me to explain this would be to equate it to the class audit program we have at AUM with one major difference:  They are FREE TO EVERYONE – Your don’t have to be a SENIOR GUEST

Upload Your Work

Another interesting aspect of P2PU is that you can upload you class syllabus and assignments and get input from your peers about how they can be improved.  Yes, they can actually go to your work and edit it.  Things can be added or deleted to your work to enhance it and make it better for your students.  I think this is such a great concept.  It provides teachers with an electronic means of getting their work critiqued.  Not only that but it enables teachers can get a wide array of modifications and the rationale behind those modifications.

Create Your Own Class

I think this is a great concept.  I’m kind of glad I waited to do my OER review last.  Why? This is the perfect platform for many if not all of the courses my WAC classmates came up with.  Specifically:

P2PU welcomes you join in the Power of Open and share your courses with everyone.  Of course some modifications may need to be made to make sure that the requirements for each course can be completed online for FREE.  I think P2PU will benefit greatly from your ideas – it’s worth looking into!

Creating your own is as simple as 1, 2, 3.

For all others, I think we could work together to launch a WAC School at P2PU.

What is a P2PU School ?

A school is a learning community that commits to be stewards of a content area. A school runs under the core values of openness, peer learning and community.

Schools are comprised of a core group of people committing to organize multiple courses within a given content area, often this group is from an established organization.  They identify core competencies in their content area and develop pathways to learning and recognition.

They even offer micro-grants to help schools develop and mature.  What better way to get all of our ideas out there for others to see and enjoy!

Of course they have a blog check it out here.

Here are some interesting things that they offer that I found by perusing their blog.

  • Blogging and Writing for the Web
A study group to support people wanting to develop confidence and better writing habits for blogs and websites.  This would have been the ideal study group for this class.  Or at least those of us like me who had never blogged before.  Maybe it would be something Dr. W can look into for future WAC classes.
  • Breaking Language Barriers
A study group to determine the best method of using P2PU to break the language barriers many people face in today’s changing society.  This course offers Urdu (never heard of it), French, and English taught by volunteers completely free of charge.  To my amazement this class referenced Kahn Academy, MITOpenCourseWare, and YouTube all as possible methods to help instruct this class.  WOW! AREN’T CONNECTIONS GREAT 🙂
  • Evidence-based Parenting
A reading group for anyone interested in child development and parenting.  Immediately this course caught my eye because I am a parent.  However, after looking at the course description I discovered they use TED videos – Cool more connections!

P2PU is my new best friend.  I have already signed up and signed up to follow a couple of classes that I found interesting.  Number one on my list was Evidence-Based Parenting.  I encourage you all to visit their website when you have time.  Also consider the WACY School idea.  I am more than willing continue journey of revolution with all of you!

This an absolutely brilliant thing! Thank you for the shout-out! I am certainly going to check this out. Great write up as well. Your writing style is very professional (which mine isn’t :P).

    • Thanks for the kind words, but I must admit I had a little of help from the various sites I visited. I just kinda mashed everything up and remixed it 🙂 YOU don’t need to be professional in your writing because that would take away from its creativity, and I’ll take creativity over professional any day! I signed up for P2PU, so I will be on the look out for your class 🙂
